Summer Running Essentials: For Staying Cool!
Georgia summer’s are very unforgiving, the sun is bright and the temps hot! Which can make any miles you run feel a lot, lot longer. So ditch those dark tees and spandex capris— it’s time for a wardrobe change, STAT! I’ve scouted out some of the latest, greatest running gear to find you the lightest, most breathable, moisture-wicking options around. These top picks promise to keep you feeling cool (and looking hot!) all summer long. (Women’s gear listed first, men’s begins about halfway down the page.)
1. Support Crew
Breathability starts at your base. The high-impact, Craft Sport-Specific Run Bra offers excellent support for your girls 🙂 while instantly moving moisture away from your skin as you sweat. Its polyester/lycra blend contains UPF 50+, which cuts down how much of the sun’s radiation strikes your skin, and is smartly woven to prevent vertical bounce. The bra is also lined with a body-cooling fabric and features superlight, open mesh along your back and in between your breasts, offering ventilation where you need it most.
2. Go Sleeveless
Throw on a lightweight, brightly colored Racerback tank over your sports bra for the perfect summer layers. Made with a poly/spandex fabric, this practically see-through tank is seriously so breathable that you’ll almost forget you’ve got a shirt on. That is, until someone compliments you on how cute it looks.
3. Sweet Tee
If you’re not into tanks but tend to overheat in regular running shirts, try the New Balance Icefil Short Sleeve. This 100 percent polyester tee is fast-drying, quick-wicking, and is woven in a way that somehow lowers your body temperature as you heat up. It also offers UPF 40+ protection and targeted mesh venting along your back for bonus breathability. Also available in men’s.
4. Bottom’s Up
Designed with a soft, stretchy, fast-drying fabric, just a 4-inch inseam, and a moisture-wicking liner underneath, the Moving Comfort Momentum Shorts are as comfortable as they are cool. They also feature two small pockets in the waistline and a large zippered pocket in the back, so you won’t have a problem stashing your stuff on longer summer runs. $44, movingcomfort.com
5. Kool Kicks
Sweaty feet are no fun, which is why Adidas created the ClimaCool Seduction running shoes. These super lightweight, cushioned sneaks were designed with holes all along the outsole and mesh fabric under the midsole to give your foot extra ventilation as you stride. They also have a moisture-wicking upper and a super-breathable sockliner. Available in 10 color combos and in men’s sizes. $100, adidas.com
1. Top Tank
When it’s too hot for sleeves, but you don’t want to run shirtless, The North Face Better Than Naked Cool Singlet is your best bet. This light, quick-wicking top has stitch-free seams for comfort and a burn-out design, where the fabric is thinned out to a point where it is practically see-through, on its back to provide extra venting for maximum breathability. It also uses an anti-odor finish (your running buddies will thank you).
2. Breezy Tee
The more you sweat, the colder Columbia’s Solar Polar Short Sleeve Crew gets. A body-cooling technology built into its fabric is actually activated by moisture, so the shirt literally cools down as your body heats up. The fast-wicking tee also contains UPF 50+, and its strategically placed mesh provides venting where you need it most (under the armpits and on your back). It’s also antimicrobial, which keeps stinky germs at bay so you won’t smell bad while you sweat either. Boom. Also available in women’s.
4. Not-So-Short Shorts
For a little more coverage, slip on a pair of the Pearl Izumi Fly Ultra Shorts. The buttery soft, moisture-wicking shorts have a 5-inch inseam, side vent panels for added breathability, a fast-drying, anti-odor liner and three storage pockets. Also available in women’s.
5. Green Sleeves
It seems a bit counterintuitive to put on an extra layer when it’s hot outside, but Craft’s Body Control Arm Coolers are the exception to the rule. These compression sleeves are made with a wicking fabric that cools your skin as you stride. They also make you look pre-tty speedy. Also available in women’s.
We hope this gear helps you stay cool this Summer 🙂
