Learn How to Stop Those Cravings!

Cravings….we all have them!

When you are trying to watch your weight, cravings can wreak havoc on your weight loss journey.

Unlike hunger, a craving usually won’t go away once you’ve satisfied it, unless you address the root of why you’re craving a certain food in the first place.  This is where we will address the meanings behind every kind of craving and provide healthy alternatives to satisfy and overcome them.




We crave sweets for a reason – either our  serotonin levels have dipped (which is often the case when women are PMSing) or we’re tired and looking for a quick energy fix in the form of sugar and simple carbs.

Carb-rich foods, such as cookies and sweets, help boost energy and serotonin levels, for a short while, but then you crash and are looking for more to sustain that energy.  Turn to a healthy source of complex carbs, such as whole grain bread.  One of our favorite go-to complex carbs is cinnamon raisin sprouted whole grain bread.  This provides natural sweetness to help with your sugar  craving and it provides energy and healthy calories.

Going for a walk or other physical activity can also help nip that craving in the bud and boost energy, as well.




If coffee is your go-to for a pick-me-up, you may be dehydrated!  When your body doesn’t get enough water, it can certainly make you feel sluggish.

Next time you are craving that caffeine fix, down a tall glass of water.  Doing this will give you the surge of energy you’re seeking.  This will also save you a lot of calories if you put cream and sugar in your coffee, and help you shed the weight.  If plain water doesn’t sound appealing, try adding some lemon or other fresh fruit to it.

Salty Snacks


If you are craving chips or fries, your sodium levels are most likely low.  This usually happens when  your body loses fluids and salt through sweat, (usually after a great workout!)

While it is very important to replace lost salt for fluid balance and blood pressure regulation, you DO NOT have to eat fattening, calorie-dense salty foods to boost this mineral intake.  Opt for anchovies, or air-popped popcorn sprinkled with sea-salt, and even celery and carrots will do the trick!  Yes, you read that right!  These veggies naturally carry a small amount of sodium. 🙂



If burgers and steaks are what you’re craving, you body is asking for iron, a mineral that’s abundant in this craving.

Since iron deficiencies can slow your metabolism, you will want to give in to this craving.  But in order to stay on track with your weight loss goals, be smart about what you eat and stick with lean cuts of grass-fed beef, which is lower in calories (and healthier) than that from the meat from conventionally raised cows.  Fortified cereals, dark leafy greens and dried fruit also help meet your body’s iron needs.
