There are so many 5k’s and 10k’s coming up this summer so of course you want to do everything you can to get ready to tackle those miles. Here are some of our best tips on how to get up and get energized at the starting line and finishing off strong for those last few minutes.
1. Start off slow
For maybe the first 10 minutes, start off at a slower pace until you want to get into a faster stride. Also, remember to do the same to cool down, a couple of minutes before the finish line.
2. Say “No” to New Foods
You don’t want to eat or drink anything new for the couple of days leading up to the race and definitely not right before the race.
3. Increase your carb-intake
Make sure you increase the amount of carbs in your diet a few days before the race. You don’t want to go crazy but by having those extra carbs, it will increase your glycogen storage and give you more energy to endure longer periods of exercise.
4. Rest the day before
Don’t go over-board on your workout on the day before the race. You don’t want to overwork your muscles so just REST. Some runners don’t even run the day before to save their energy.
This is so easy but so important. So many people forget to breath during their run that they run out of breath before they even reach the half-way mark. Do breathing exercises (slow exhales and inhales) regularly and during your workouts before the race to get your lungs working and in shape.
We hope you’ve enjoyed these tips and we wish you lots of luck on your 5 or 10k. Have fun!!
